MBC Presents

These special programs comprise the MBC's series of educational seminars, lectures, interviews, roundtable discussions and dramatic re-creations. Since its opening in 1987, the MBC has produced over 180 public programs that offer insights and analyses of media scholars, respected broadcast journalists, and pioneers.

Advertising and the First Amendment

Historical Perspectives on Political Advertising

Political historian Julian Kanter of the University of Oklahoma presents an overview of political advertising on television from the early black-and-white "I Like Ike" ads in 1952 to the controversial Willie Horton ads in 1988.

African-American Media Ownership

Gary Deeb hosts a panel discussion on the portrayal of lawyers and the legal system on prime time television. Included is a montage of courtroom drama programs with commentary.

Women on Television: Images of Women on Television

To kick-off its exhibition on the images of women on television, the MBC began with a roundtable discussion featuring three of television's greatest leading ladies: Betty White (Golden Girls), Gale Storm (My Little Margie), and Jane Wyatt (Father Knows Best).

Women on Television: Teenage Girls

In this seminar, moderated by Dr. Mary Ann Watson, the role of teenage girls on television is examined by Elinor Donahue (Father Knows Best) and Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa Explains it All).

Women on Television: African-Americans

For its exhibition on the images of women on television, the MBC staged this seminar, "Range and Shade," on the images of African-American women on television. Esther Rolle (Good Times), Regina Taylor (I'll Fly Away), and Anna Maria Horsford (Amen) take part.

Former Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy, former Chicago police spokesman Frank Sullivan and a panel of TV journalists recall the 1968 Democratic Convention. The group examines the footage of the confrontation between protestors, press, and police.

Mayor Richard J. Daley and the Media

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death, Mayor Richard J. Daley's career is examined by a panel of veteran Chicago journalists who explore the significant aspects of his career, including footage of the Our Lady of the Angels fire, the 1966 riots, and the 1968 Democratic Convention.

A Day in the Life of CNN

To mark CNN's 10th anniversary, three veteran CNN correspondents discuss the history and evolution of cable television's first all-news network. The discussion includes an examination of CNN's unique news gathering and video of the Challenger crash.

Celebrating Television's 60th Anniversary: A Reunion of the DuMont Television Network

This celebration of the 60th anniversary of the first television program (broadcast over NBC at the New York World's Fair April 30, 1939) examines the contributions of Allen B. DuMont and the DuMont Network to our culture. Vintage clips from DuMont programs are also included.
