Green Design

The new MBC will be a "green" building -- designed and equipped to be energy efficient, to minimize waste and pollution, to reduce the consumption of resources, and to enhance indoor environmental quality.

The MBC's building is destined to be the first public museum in Illinois to earn a gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

The LEED Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.

LEED Certification distinguishes building projects that have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability by meeting the highest performance standards.

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation‘s
$1.4 million in total grants will support the construction of a "green" MBC and a museum education program showcasing the benefits of building "green." The MBC has hired sustainable design architect Helen Kessler to oversee the greening of the new MBC.
